White Coats on Call

By Mark P. Hickman
Commonwealth Strategy Group

On Tuesday, February 4, 2020 members of PSV joined MSV for a lobby day at the General Assembly. VCU residents Dr. Katherine Shalit and Dr. Jonathan Punzi joined PSV President Dr. John Urbach and retired psychiatrist Helen Foster.

They visited their legislators and reviewed various bills of interest to psychiatrists, including removal of prior authorization for certain drugs prescribed by psychiatrists, mental health parity reporting requirements, and Certificate of Public Need exemptions for psychiatric beds. The PSV participants had great conversations with legislators and their staff, who appreciated hearing from, and being able to ask questions of, psychiatrists and constituents on these important mental health issues.

MSV’s White Coats on Call and PSV’s lobby day are important advocacy opportunities for psychiatrists and residents to engage in the legislative process and represent the voice of psychiatry in state government. Thank you to all our participants and the legislators for your leadership and support!
