UVA Update

By Mark Hickman
Commonwealth Strategy Group

Mark Hickman Speaks to UVAOn July 9, 2019, PSV's Andrew Mann, along with lobbyist Mark Hickman with Commonwealth Strategy Group, met with UVA residents to discuss PSV and APA membership as well as legislative and advocacy updates. Legislative, regulatory and policy highlights included balanced billing, certificate of public need reform, step therapy and prior authorization reform, state budget items of interest, behavioral health hospital and mental health system reform, the Deeds Commission, mid-level provider expansion efforts and other topics. We also talked about the General Assembly's special session that Governor Northam called to address gun control. Finally, we highlighted the importance of this year's elections, where all 140 seats of the legislature will be on the ballot. Residents heard about how important and easy it is to get involved in PSV and policy advocacy. We enjoyed our visit at UVA and look forward to the PSV Fall Meeting in October.

Dr. Eliza Buelt will be starting her community psychiatry fellowship and Dr. Jordan Rosen, who served as a member of our faculty this past year at UVA, will be starting his consult liaison fellowship at Yale University. Dr. Josh Smith will be going to complete child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Mass General Hospital. Dr. Marie Lyse Turk will be heading to Boston University for consult liaison psychiatry fellowship. Dr.  Colleen Leitner, who is current fourth-year resident will be a child psychiatry fellow next year at UVA. Dr. Michele (Vargas) Wilis will be at University of Colorado for forensic psychiatry fellowship. We are also incredibly excited that Dr. Quincy Zhong will be staying at UVA as the very first addiction medicine fellow!

We are very excited about also welcoming two new residents into the second-year class: Elaine Duffy and Jason Pickett!

Two new faculty will be joining the department: Dr. Keri Stevenson (UVA psychiatry class of 2018) and Dr. Gabriela Pachano (UVA psychiatry class of 2019).
