VCU Health System Update

By Avneet Madan, MD
Junior Chief Resident
VCU Department of Psychiatry

With the onset of Spring, we have lots of exciting news at VCU Psychiatry. We had a successful match and our department would like to welcome our incoming intern class: Lauren (Alex) Abrose, DO;  Tiffanee Brown, MD;  Arthur Calloway, DO;  Kinsey Hall, MD;  Stuart Hedgpeth, MD;  Charles Kramer, MD;  Sean Mardis, DO;  Danny Shaban, DO;  Katherine Shalit, MD;  Megan Small, DO and Sher Tucker, DO. We look forward to working with our new trainees in July. Recruitment would not have been possible without our dedicated recruitment chairs who worked tirelessly this year: Lauren Baker, MD; Simrun Kaur, MD and Zachary Ruppenkamp, DO. Thanks for all your hard work!

We would also like to congratulate our senior residents and fellows who will be graduating this year: Michael Fox, DO;  My Chuong, MD; Reeyaz Esack, MD;  Ashima Aneja, DO;  Benjamin Lowe, MD;  Shrina Desai, MD;  Dana Ngugi, DO;  Aslihan Sogutlu, MD and Dana Soper, MD. The graduation ceremony will be held at the lovely Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in June and we wish our graduates the best of luck!

Our Addiction Medicine Fellowship will be starting in July 2018 with Dr. Michael Fox as the inaugural fellow.  Seven of our residents presented scholarly work at the 2017 PSV Fall Meeting in Virginia Beach. Our residents continue to excel in research and will be presenting scholarly work at the annual American Psychiatric Association Conference in May including: Drs. Michael DiBiase,  Andrew Snyder and Avneet Madan. This increase would not be possible without the efforts of Dr. Andrew Snyder who is currently a PGY-3 enrolled in the research track. Other good news is that PRITE scores continue to increase and this year is no exception.

We will be lacing up our shoes and gathering at Uptown Bowling Alley in April for our yearly resident retreat. We are excited to use this day as a platform to discuss further change. With the new year coming up, we would like to congratulate our rising Junior Chiefs: Drs. Shaheen Ali,  Lauren Baker and Kathryn Williams. Along with our rising Chief Residents: Drs. Caitlin Carnell, Zachary Ruppenkamp and Avneet Madan.

As always, we would like to recognize our program director, Dr. Christopher Kogut, who is our strongest advocate. He was recently awarded the Leadership in Graduate Medical Education “LCME” Award. Hooray and congratulations!
