By J.R. Landvater, MD, MBA
Lieutenant, Medical Corps, United States Navy
Psychiatry Resident (PGY-2)

The 33rd Annual Navy Medicine East Academic Research Competition was held on March 23 at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The competition consists of multiple categories such as oral presentations, case reports and a poster competition. The competition was open to all active duty and government service employees on staff through the Navy Medicine East area of responsibility.

A total of 78 entries were selected for presentation among a wide variety of medical and surgical specialties. The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Psychiatry Residency program was well represented with seven residents chosen to present their posters.  A wide variety of topics were presented to include psychosis and autoimmune function after sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury, treatment of psychosis due to medical condition, atypical presentation of psychosis, valproate-induced hyperammonemia, advancing the treatment algorithm of pediatric akathisia and cultural considerations in a patient presenting with paranoia. A big congratulations goes out to all of those selected to participate!
