ECT-Then and Now

By Tracey Criss, MD

An ECT presentation was given by Tracey Criss, MD of Carilion Clinic. This was followed by a panel discussion with Chuck Swanson, MD; Justin White, MD; Bush Kavuru, MD and Tracey Criss, MD, Carilion Clinic psychiatrists and faculty at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The history of ECT, making the choice of appropriate patient candidates for ECT, electrode placement, medications used during ECT, potential complications, and prognosis were all reviewed during the presentation. ECT is an under utilized procedure, but is valuable to the patient in its rapid onset of effectiveness and its success rate.

You’re Ready to Practice… Now What?
Risk Management Considerations

By  Moira Wertheimer, Esq., RN, CPHRM

Moira Wertheimer, Esq., RN, CPHRM, provided a risk management education program to the ECP/RF’s entitled, “You’re Ready to Practice… Now What? Risk Management Considerations.”  The presentation reviewed various risk management and legal considerations psychiatrists may encounter when entering practice after residency or fellowship, or as an early career psychiatrist. Some of the options for employment discussed were: opening a solo office, forming a partnership, and joining a group practice as an independent contractor or employee. The session provided an overview of issues to consider within each of the above options, explored topics such as medical record retention/release, acting in a supervisory capacity, the importance of establishing an office compliance system and discussed contractual considerations with a new or existing partnership.  Attendees were provided with risk management strategies designed to reduce their liability exposure in each of these areas.
